The Hidden Message

They say that ads are needed
To show you all things new
Promote and sell those objects
In any store near you!
We see them round every corner
We pass them on every street
In TV commercials and papers,
Even recite them in our sleep!
We learn through them of things
That we didn’t know before,
Like you need to have whiter skin
For careers, love life and more?
We learn that to be thought beautiful
We must look so much younger
Wrinkles and pimples aren’t natural
And, with every soap, get a free daughter!
And God forbid every perfume
Must be sprayed for a sexual partner
And that drinking flavoured milk
Will make you taller, stronger, sharper?
And if objects don’t sell, (oh dear!)
We strip some stars for sale so lusty
Excite those unchecked hormones
To buy six-packs and chests busty!
There’s nothing to deny these images
Terrible money-hungry advertisers spread
No lesson learnt from those million cases
That cigarettes bring up the dead!
Capitalists, opportunists, commercial tyrants,
Never stop, never care, never think,
Money is power, power is life,
Rich lives for a few, all the rest may sink.
Yet once in every blue moon
There’s one commercial that will shine
A pair of squirrels, a message of love,

And, like comets, vanish, flashing through time.
